Today in class we analyzed an excerpt between a Native American and Englishman. Using the syntax chart, we analyzed the syntax of the passage. We concluded that the speaker had a hostile attitude against his audience, and was insistent on his way. His diction and use of parallelism put an emphasis on the opposing group and their words, and created a distinct separation between "you" and "me".
We learned about two analytical terms:
  • Parallelism: similarity in words/phrases/structure in a passage. The patterns in a passage
  • Juxtaposition: placement of ideas close by to emphasize similarities or differences
We went over word order, and that the standard word order of a sentence is "subject-verb-object" and that an inverted sentence would be "verb-object-subject" or "verb-subject-object", etc..

Our notes in class included going over the syntax in Queen Elizabeth's speech (pages 40-41 in the book). We looked over how she established ethos and pathos in her words. Her speech was humble yet inspiring and strong, and through that tone she built herself up as a leader while staying on the same level as her subjects.
We then read Winston Churchill's "Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat", and did a close reading for homework.

Our homework for this day was the weekly CEJ (#5) and spelling test (#2), along with the close reading of Churchill's "Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat". We did not have Ralph Ellison's passage as homework for Thursday.
